KINDERGARTEN AT A GLANCE
Our kindergarten program strives to nurture a stable, God-centered, loving environment while promoting academic excellence. We pride ourselves on being a fun and safe space to learn, all while taking great care to provide our students with a strong core curriculum and enriched activities. Phonics and Handwriting In Kindergarten, we work extensively on building our reading and writing foundation. Our reading curriculum is built on 35 weeks of phonics instruction, broken into three units. Unit One focuses on alphabet review and handwriting. We begin by covering one letter per day, brushing up on letter recognition and sounds. Through the use of creative movement, students will correlate phonetic sounds with moving their bodies. Unit Two dives into a more in-depth look at the alphabet, focusing on letter sounds and writing improvement. Unit Three concentrates on rigorous skills such as: short vowels, long vowels, blends, digraphs, and more!
Math Kindergarten Math is a teacher-created, kid-tested, and kid-approved math curriculum. The KinderMath method relies on guidance from the teacher. Students, along with their partners, will TEACH and LEARN math through hands-on and engaging math activities. A few highlights you will see with KinderMath units are: kids talking about math, kids using manipulatives, activities that are fun + engaging, and learning that requires critical thinking! KinderMath is a research-based program created by The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and math guru John A. Van de Walle.
Guided Reading (Small Groups) Our guided reading curriculum focuses on site words and phonetic awareness. Each week we engage in small group reading where our weekly sight words are brought to life through the books we read. Classroom books are available on three reading tiers, ensuring each student the ability to read at their appropriate level.
Science Our KinderScience curriculum is standards-based and encourages young learners to think “outside the box”. This method encourages students to prove their thinking through hands-on and engaging learning experiences. KinderScience® targets five themed units: Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, Space and Simple Machines, and Five Senses. Many of these units are reinforced through our S.T.E.A.M. enrichment classes.
Social Studies Our Kindergarten Social Studies curriculum, much like our science curriculum, encourages young learners to think “outside the box”. Students are encouraged to prove their thinking through hands-on and engaging learning experiences. This curriculum is based upon five units: Rules, United States/Community Helpers, Maps, Cultures and Economics. Our social studies unit provides a rich understanding of our community, country, and world.
ENRICHED SPECIALS
Our specials are designed to enhance and provide a well-rounded learning experience for our students. Through these classes, your child will be able to learn problem-solving skills (as well as creative and constructive thinking) in fun and exciting ways. The following specials are all included in the price of tuition!
ArtIn this class, students will learn how to express their feelings and creativity using different elements of art. Various forms of media will be used to introduce students to artists from around world, art history, and application. Your child will continue to develop fine motor skills through cutting, molding, painting and drawing. These skills are also important in strengthening their hands for writing dexterity. When relevant, our projects will reinforce lessons taught in the kindergarten classroom.
KarateIn this class, your child will get their body moving while learning basic self-defense and martial arts skills. They will also learn social skills, discipline, respect, and honor.
MusicOur veteran music instructor, Linda Hemphill, will teach students to coordinate their voices and movement to different tunes. Our music class helps build confidence and musical enjoyment in young learners.
S.T.E.A.M.S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) is fun and exciting! Our ultimate goal is to help stimulate interest across all of these disciplines and grow young minds into future science and tech experts.
Science Your child will learn the scientific method and how to apply it to experiments. They will safely explore how materials react to one another and use critical thinking to determine what causes those reactions.
Technology Curious kindergartners love learning with the iPads! Working with these devices helps develop hand eye coordination, fine motor prowess, and other various skills. Basic coding is introduced with age-appropriate resources and activities, including the use of coding robots with primary level apps. We will explore new S.T.E.A.M. tools and resources while using logic and critical thinking. We often make cross curricular connections to classroom subject areas as well.
Engineering Your child will explore building with several different types of materials. We will concentrate on developing key problem-solving skills through trial and error while learning how to critically think through those problems and find a solution.
ArtStudents will explore unique and creative ways to make art while incorporating other S.T.E.A.M. elements (such as math and science).
Math Kindergarteners will continue to use the basic math skills they are learning in class. Through the use of measuring, addition, and subtraction, math is incorporated into the majority of our S.T.E.A.M. lessons.
